What size wall art to hang above a sofa or bed

Most art is hung too small and too high. Three numbers fix both, and they work in every room.
Rule 1 — cover two-thirds of the furniture width
Art should span about 60–75% of whatever sits beneath it. Narrower than that and the wall swallows it.

Rule 2 — 6 to 8 inches above the furniture
The bottom edge of the frame sits 6–8 inches above the sofa back or headboard. Closer and it looks stacked; higher and the art floats off on its own, disconnected from the furniture.
Rule 3 — 57 inches to the centre on an empty wall
Gallery standard is 57 inches from the floor to the centre of the artwork — average eye level. The arithmetic for a 24×36 print: centre at 57, half the height is 18, so the top edge lands at 75 inches and the hook goes a little below that depending on the wire. Every product page has a to-scale view built on exactly these numbers.
Gallery walls: one ratio, one gap
The reason a gallery wall reads as designed rather than accumulated is consistency in two things: shared aspect ratio and even spacing.
- Keep 2–3 inches between frames, the same gap everywhere.
- Use one ratio across the set — three 3:4 prints beat three mismatched shapes.
- Treat the whole arrangement as a single rectangle, then apply the two-thirds and 57-inch rules to that rectangle.
- Lay it on the floor first, then trace paper templates and tape them to the wall before drilling.
Ceilings above 9 feet. Raise the centre to 60–62 inches and go one print size up; the 57-inch rule assumes an 8-foot ceiling.
Pairs, trios and odd numbers
Two prints centred over a bed should each be half the headboard width minus the gap. Trios read best when all three share one ratio and hang from a shared centre line rather than a shared top edge. Our room bundles are built as sets that already share a ratio.

How high above a sofa should art hang exactly?
Leave 6 to 8 inches between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame, and make sure the artwork spans roughly two-thirds of the sofa width.
Is 57 inches to the centre or the top of the frame?
To the centre of the artwork. Measure half the frame height up from 57 inches to find the top edge, then position the hook for your hanging hardware.
What if my wall is very wide?
Widen the arrangement rather than enlarging one print: a trio or a two-row grid fills a wide wall better, and stays in proportion with the furniture below.
Do I have to match frame colours in a gallery wall?
No, but pick one finish family — all warm woods, or all black — and keep the mat colour identical. Mixed mats are what makes a wall look unplanned.
