Where to print your download, and what it costs

You own the file; now someone has to put ink on paper. Four routes, with honest trade-offs on price, quality and how long you wait.

Office supply counters: the budget large format

Poster or engineering prints get a 24×36 onto the wall for very little. The trade-off is real: thinner stock, looser colour, and often a satin sheen. Fine for a rental hallway or a kids' room; not the piece above the sofa. Upload the PDF, ask for "no scaling / print at 100%", and tell them not to auto-enhance.

Local photo labs: the best value per dollar

A good local lab will print 16×20 on 250 gsm matte, colour-managed, for a fraction of a framed retail print, and you can see the paper before you commit. Search "giclée printing" or "fine art printing" plus your city. Bring the PDF on a USB stick and the exact words from the paper guide.

Online fine-art printers

Useful when you need a gallery wall to match: same paper, same ink, same batch. Order all pieces in one job. Watch for upload limits — a 24×36 at 300 DPI can exceed 100 MB, so some sites will ask for the JPG rather than the PDF.

What to send, in every case

Framing while you are out. Buy the frame before you print. Frames come in fixed sizes; your file comes in 24. Matching art to frame is free — matching frame to art means custom framing, which is where the budget goes.

Questions we get asked

Can I print at a drugstore photo counter?

For 4×6 up to 8×10 it is quick and cheap, but those machines are built for photos and will auto-correct colour. Ask for correction off, and expect glossy unless you specify matte.

Do print shops need permission to print my file?

Some ask for proof you may reproduce the image. Forward your receipt email, or show the personal-use licence on our licence page — that is normally enough.

Is shipping a printed poster cheaper than printing locally?

Rarely, once tube shipping is included, and a rolled print needs days flat before it frames well. Local is usually faster and cheaper above 16×20.

What if the lab says the file is low resolution?

They are probably looking at the wrong ratio folder, or at the watermarked website preview rather than your download. Send the file matching the ordered size from your ZIP.
